The Salt Monks of the Dying Sea

In the Receding Tide, Ancient Secrets Are Salt-Cured

By Alex Merced · Published 2026-08-03 · Online Supplements

The Sea of Tears is drying up. Where a vast ocean once stood, only shallow, crystal-crusted brine flats remain. The Salt Monks dwell in monasteries built on high coastal cliffs now miles from the water's edge. They spend their lives walking the white salt flats, harvesting magical brine-salt crystals that preserve flesh, food, and even human souls. But as the last deep-water trench dries, an ancient Leviathan buried under the salt for ten thousand years begins to stir, sending tremors through the monastery foundations.

Core Mechanic: Brine Preservation: Track the character's salt-cured state as Brine Preservation from 0 to 6. Applying sacred salt to wounds or ingesting brine elixirs increases Preservation. High Preservation grants resistance to rot, disease, and environmental heat, but causes skin calcification and loss of emotional expression.

“Salt remembers what the water forgot. Rub the crystal onto the wound and be still.”

1. Setting Overview and Tone

The Dying Sea is a landscape of stark, blinding beauty. Endless white salt crust covers what was once an ocean floor, dotted with rusted shipwrecks, coral reefs exposed to open air, and shallow pools of magenta brine.

The Salt Monks wear heavy, salt-hardened robes and bone goggles to shield their eyes from the blinding glare.

Tone: Mythic, solemn, austere, and atmospheric. Blends desolate wasteland survival with ancient monastic mysticism.

Sensory Pillars:

  1. Sight: Blinding white salt flats meeting a pale turquoise sky. Magenta brine pools shimmering with salt crystals. Massive ribcages of prehistoric sea beasts sticking out of dry mud.
  2. Sound: The crunch of salt crust under boots. The whistling wind blowing through hollow coral formations. The low, subsonic rumble of the sleeping Leviathan beneath the salt floor.
  3. Touch and Smell: Sharp, stinging salt in eye corners and cuts. The intense smell of ocean brine, dried seaweed, and baking sun.

2. The Dying Landscape

The High Monastery of Salt: Carved into the cliffs overlooking the former coastline, housing the sacred Salt Vaults.

The Brine Pits: Shallow, hyper-saline pools where monks harvest glowing blue preservation crystals.

The Leviathan Trench: The deepest part of the dried sea bed where the ancient creature lies dormant under a miles-wide crust of salt.

3. Factions

The Order of the White Crystal: Monks dedicated to preserving life, history, and relics using sacred salt.

The Brine Scavengers: Desperate wasteland nomads who raid salt convoys to sell preservation crystals to surface warlords.

The Awakening Cult: Fanatics who believe the awakening Leviathan will flood the world once more, and actively break the salt seals holding the creature down.

4. Unique Mechanic: Brine Preservation

Track Brine Preservation from 0 to 6.

Preservation Effects:

  • 0-1: Normal human state. Vulnerable to heat, disease, and rot.
  • 2-3: Salt-touched. Immune to poison and disease; skin takes on a tough, leathery texture.
  • 4-5: Calcified. Physical damage reduced by 1; disadvantage on Presence and empathy checks due to emotional numbness.
  • 6: Salt Pillar. Body crystallizes into solid salt statue; mind preserved in psychic stasis.
