Raise the Stakes, Not the Dead

The School Board has reviewed their haunted house concept and has one clarifying question before approval: will the ghosts be actual ghosts, or theatrical simulations. 1. Setting Overview & Tone

High-Concept Pitch: Necromancer parents are extremely invested in their children’s education. They are also extremely invested in ensuring the school’s curriculum appropriately supports necromantic career paths. They have organized.

Ashwick Academy of Arcane Arts serves students from all magical disciplines: wizardry, enchantment, divination, elemental magic, and necromancy. The necromancy track is rigorous, well-funded (necromancers tend to do well professionally), and supported by a Parent-Teacher Association that has achieved an unusual level of institutional influence.

The comedy emerges from the complete sincerity of everyone involved. The necromancer parents genuinely love their children and genuinely want the best for their education. The faculty genuinely wants to serve all students. The resulting PTA dynamic is exactly what you’d expect when very engaged parents who can animate the dead become involved in school governance.

Tone: This is parent-teacher relationship comedy filtered through necromantic sensibility. The undead parents are dedicated to their children. The animated proxies they send to meetings are professional and well-maintained. The bake sale items that reanimate are cleaned up quickly. Everyone is trying.

Sensory Pillars:

1. Sight: A school cafeteria PTA meeting where approximately a third of the attendees are undead proxies (maintaining professional posture, taking good notes), the bake sale table where items are carefully arranged and one scone keeps slowly sliding off the tray, the safety committee’s presentation which includes a detailed hazard map of the school that is extremely thorough because necromancers understand mortal risk intimately.
2. Sound: The normal background of a school meeting room (chairs, papers, someone’s child waiting outside), punctuated by the different resonance of animated proxy speech (slightly out of phase with normal acoustics), the creak of the undead parent in the corner who has been silent for 40 minutes and was almost forgotten, and the very specific sound of the school principal choosing their next words very carefully.
3. Touch & Smell: The standard institutional smell of a school meeting room, subtly modified by the presence of magical preservation (the undead proxies require it), the touch of a PTA agenda printed on good paper (the necromancy track parents donated the printer), and the occasional bone-cold draft when an undead proxy moves unexpectedly.

The Core Tension: The necromancer parents are effective, organized, and genuinely invested. Their methods and priorities are not always easily reconciled with the broader school community. Diplomacy required.

2. PTA Structure & Key Members

The PTA President

An extraordinarily organized human parent whose non-necromantic background makes them the diplomatic center of the PTA. They have become an expert at translation between necromantic and conventional parenting philosophies. They are tired. They are very good at this.

The Necromancy Track Parent Bloc

Seven parents, three of whom are technically undead and attending through proxies. They are extremely organized, have prepared detailed documentation for every agenda item, and their fundraiser proposals always come with full risk assessments (occupational hazard).

The Faculty Representative

A veteran teacher who has been at Ashwick long enough to find the necromancy track parents less unusual than new faculty do. Their primary goal is ensuring all students receive equal educational support regardless of discipline.

The School Board Observer

Attends every meeting. Takes extensive notes. Their reports to the School Board describe the PTA as “functionally effective” and “occasionally supernatural” and “not technically in violation of any existing regulation.”

3. Adventure Seeds

1. The Fundraiser: The haunted house fundraiser is approved. Players must organize, staff, and run it. The actual haunting from the school’s existing ghost population (three; they’re harmless) requires negotiation and consent forms. The necromancy track parents have opinions about theatrical authenticity.

2. The Academic Review: The School Board is reviewing the necromancy track curriculum after a parent complained that their non-necromantic child came home with questions about mortality after attending a mixed-discipline assembly. The review threatens the track’s continued operation. The PTA must defend it.

3. The New Family: A family has enrolled their child in the necromancy track who is not, themselves, necromancers. They are trying to integrate with the PTA. They had not anticipated the PTA’s composition. Their acculturation requires support.

4. The Bake Sale Incident: The spring bake sale experienced an incident. Several items animated. Nobody was harmed. The school board wants a full report. The report must acknowledge the cause (a parent brought an experimental recipe), propose prevention measures, and not make the situation worse than it already is by being too honest about how it happened.

5. The Graduation: Graduation planning for the necromancy track includes a complication: three students have arranged to have their own animated proxies present them their diplomas as a philosophical statement about the nature of self and achievement. The school principal needs a position on this. The PTA is divided. The students are extremely confident in their artistic vision.
