The Silk Road of Flying Cities

Commerce Above the Cloud Line

By Alex Merced · Published 2026-08-03 · Online Supplements

High above the uninhabitable toxic cloud sea that covers the world's surface, a network of floating sky-cities moves along atmospheric thermal currents. The Sky Silk Road connects these floating metropolises via massive trade airships, sky-barges, and daring sky-sailors. Traders exchange cloud-silk harvested from aerial sky-spiders, lightning-refined sky-gems, and fresh water harvested from high-altitude rain clouds. But sky-pirates, unstable thermal storms, and rising toxic cloud levels threaten the trade lanes.

Core Mechanic: Altitude Vector: Track the airship's flight elevation as Altitude Vector from 0 to 6. Rising into high-altitude jetstreams increases Speed but reduces Oxygen. Dropping near the Cloud Sea increases Lift but risks toxic cloud exposure and hull corrosion.

“Keep your eye on the cloud line, deckhand. If the mist turns purple, drop ballast and climb immediately. The toxic sea eats brass in ten seconds.”

  • Captain Kael, Airship Sky-Dancer

1. Setting Overview and Tone

The Sky Realm is a vibrant, sunlit world existing entirely above the clouds. Cities are built on massive floating levitation-stone platforms anchored together by heavy iron chains.

Trade airships use a combination of levitation-stone hulls and vast silk sails to catch jetstreams traveling between city-nodes.

Tone: Heroic adventure, romantic fantasy, swashbuckling, and grand scope. High visual splendor, trade economics, and aerial combat.

Sensory Pillars:

  1. Sight: Endless white ocean of clouds stretching to the horizon under brilliant blue skies. Golden-sailed airships docking at floating marble towers.
  2. Sound: The roaring wind through silk sails. The mechanical clatter of winches and rigging. The chime of navigational bells.
  3. Touch and Smell: Crisp, thin alpine air. The smell of cedar wood decks, lanolin rope grease, and ozone from lightning storms.

2. The Sky Cities

Aethelgard (The Floating Jewel): The wealthiest sky-city, known for its soaring marble towers and central trade bazaar.

The Cloud-Silk Spindles: Floating harvesters anchored near high-altitude nebulae where giant sky-spiders weave cloud-silk.

The Anchor Station: A massive chain hub where airships dock to refuel levitation-gas and trade maps.

3. Factions

The Merchants Alliance: The powerful guild controlling sky-city trade charters and airship registration.

The Sky-Corsairs: Outlaw airship captains who raid trade convoys from hidden cloud-cove bases.

The Low-Cloud Guild: Experimental divers who wear specialized suits to plunge into the toxic cloud sea to salvage ancient surface ruins.

4. Unique Mechanic: Altitude Vector

Track Altitude Vector from 0 to 6.

Vector Zones:

  • 5-6 (Jetstream Layer): Maximum travel speed (+2 to speed checks). Thin air penalty without oxygen masks.
  • 2-4 (Standard Flight Corridor): Optimal maneuvering. Safe docking envelope.
  • 0-1 (Low Cloud Sea Boundary): High thermal lift, but toxic cloud exposure causes 1 hull corrosion per turn.

5. Character Archetypes

The Sky Captain

You command a trade airship with a sharp eye for thermal currents and pirate ambushes.

  • Drive: “Deliver the rare cloud-silk cargo to Aethelgard before the competition.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 2 | Mind 1 | Presence 3

The Rigging Master

You climb the high silk sails and manage levitation-stone ballast during flight.

  • Drive: “Keep the sails trimmed and the ship flying through severe weather.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 2 | Finesse 3 | Mind 1 | Presence 1

The Cloud Diver

You wear a heavy brass diving suit and drop below the cloud line to salvage ancient surface relics.

  • Drive: “Recover ancient pre-fall artifacts from the toxic surface ruins.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 2 | Finesse 1 | Mind 3 | Presence 1

6. Starter Scenario: The Ambush at Storm-Pass

While carrying a priceless shipment of refined sky-gems through the narrow Storm-Pass canyon, the Sky-Dancer is ambushed by a Corsair war-galleon. A sudden thermal storm rises from the cloud sea, pinning both ships between jagged levitation rocks.

The player characters must repair torn sails under heavy wind, repel Corsair boarding parties across swinging boarding lines, and dive into the upper cloud layer to break away into the clear sky.
