The Void Engineers: Controlled Nothingness
Void Rifts, Industrial Nothing, and the Containment Failure
The Void Engineers discovered that controlled nothingness is the most efficient industrial technology ever developed. A void rift - a contained opening into absolute empty space - provides an unlimited disposal channel (anything pushed through dissolves instantly), an extraction channel (material from adjacent dimensions can be pulled through with precise calibration), and a pressure differential drive that powers every Void Engine in the city. The Void Corps maintains over 40,000 active rifts across the city's infrastructure. The oldest rifts are 40 years old. The theoretical maximum stability duration for a contained void rift, based on the last 5 years of data, is 47 years. Rift failure events are rare but documented: three in forty years, each resulting in localized reality dissolution events that the Void Corps classified as equipment malfunctions. Thirteen engineers who signed incident reports on those events have since retired. A whistleblower has sent documentation to two journalists and a city council member suggesting the Void Corps has known for a decade that the oldest rifts are approaching instability and has not begun decommissioning them.
“Void Rift Installation VR-0001 has maintained stable containment for 40 years without incident. We are proud of the engineering that makes this possible. We have confidence in the continued stability of our older installations.”
- Void Corps annual infrastructure statement, three weeks before the whistleblower contacted journalists
1. Setting Overview
The Void Engineers built civilization’s most efficient industrial infrastructure and, somewhere along the way, chose not to tell anyone what the stability data said. The decision was not dramatic - it was incremental. First, a decision not to include the stability timeline in a public report. Then, a decision to reclassify three failure incidents. Then, a decision to reframe the maintenance schedule. None of the individual decisions required someone to be a villain. All of them together require forty-year-old void rifts to remain active in a populated city.
The whistleblower is not an idealist - she is a Void Corps engineer who read the decommissioning timeline and ran the numbers. Twenty-three installations are currently older than the theoretical maximum stability duration. Forty-one more will cross that threshold within two years. The Void Corps does not have a decommissioning plan because decommissioning a void rift requires replacing it with an alternative power source, and no alternative has been built.
Tone: Industrial catastrophe thriller. The horror is not supernatural. It is procedural: the consequences of a series of defensible decisions that together constitute a serious danger to a lot of people.
2. The Void Infrastructure
The Void Corps employs 8,000 engineers and maintenance workers across 40,000+ active installations. Most of its workforce does not have access to the complete stability dataset. The people who do are in senior management.
The Whistleblower’s Network currently consists of one person who sent documents to three recipients. Two of those recipients are journalists trying to verify the documents. One is a city council member who is waiting to understand the political implications before deciding what to do.
The Emergency Alternative Energy Coalition is an industry group that has been arguing for void-alternative energy infrastructure for 15 years and has been consistently outlobbied by the Void Corps. Their technical proposals exist. Their political path has been blocked.
3. Factions
The Void Corps - The infrastructure monopolist. Senior management is aware of the stability timeline. Most of the workforce is not.
The Whistleblower - One engineer with documentation. Currently still employed at the Void Corps. Has not yet been identified as the source.
The City Council Risk Committee - The council body responsible for infrastructure safety assessment. The member who received the documents has called a private committee session for next week.
4. Unique Mechanic
Rift Sense (1-6):
- 3+: Detect void rifts within 100m. Assess Stability Rating (1-6, 1 = imminent failure).
- 5+: Emergency Containment - full scene, Mind difficulty 4. Buys 24 hours.
- Full stabilization: team of 3 Rift Sense 4+ mages, full session.
- 5+ near catastrophic failure: sense it 1d6 minutes before it occurs.
5. Character Archetypes
The Void Corps Maintenance Engineer
Rift Sense 4. Assigned to the oldest installation district. Has noticed anomalous readings in VR-0001 through VR-0007 that do not match the Corps’ official stability assessments. Has filed four internal anomaly reports. Has received three acknowledgment notices and no action.
- Drive: “Find the whistleblower before the Corps does and give her the anomaly report data to add to the documentation.”
- Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 2 | Mind 4 | Presence 1
The Risk Committee Council Member
Received the whistleblower documentation. Has reviewed it with a technical advisor. The documentation appears genuine. Has been sitting on it for five days because publishing it before verification causes panic and after verification, if she waits, she is complicit.
- Drive: “Verify the documentation independently and decide whether to call a public session before or after the Void Corps figures out the documents are circulating.”
- Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 2 | Mind 2 | Presence 3
6. Starter Scenario
VR-0001 Anomaly: The maintenance engineer’s latest anomaly report on VR-0001 - the oldest installation, now 40 years old - shows readings consistent with the pre-failure signatures documented in the three classified incident reports that the whistleblower’s documents include. Her current Stability Rating assessment: 2. The Corps’ official assessment: 5. VR-0001 powers 12 city blocks of residential area in the northern district. The characters have three resources: the engineer’s anomaly data, the whistleblower’s documents, and the council member’s private committee session in four days. The anomaly readings suggest VR-0001 has less than four days of stable containment remaining.
