The Dream Weavers of the Sleep Syndicate

In the Architecture of Sleep, Nightmares Are Business

By Alex Merced · Published 2026-08-03 · Online Supplements

In the sprawling metropolis of Somnus City, people no longer dream naturally. A black-market network known as the Sleep Syndicate manufactures and distributes tailored dreams: synthetic fantasies of wealth, love, or power delivered via somnambulant serum. Dream Weavers enter the subconscious landscapes of sleeping clients to construct these dreamscapes. But when a dark, viral nightmare begins jumping from mind to mind during shared dream sessions, leaving clients in a waking coma, the Weavers must enter the deep subconscious to destroy the nightmare core.

Core Mechanic: Dream Stability: Track the stability of the active dreamscape as Dream Stability from 6 down to 0. Breaking dream logic, introducing waking-world objects, or suffering damage from nightmare entities reduces Stability. At Stability 0, the dreamscape collapses, trapping all weavers in the Lucid Void.

“Rule 1 of Dream Weaving: Always carry your subconscious totem. If the water runs uphill and your totem floats, you’re still inside the dream.”

  • Master Weaver Vesper

1. Setting Overview and Tone

Somnus City is a noir-tinged city that never sleeps. The streets are lined with “Dream Dens” where patrons lie on velvet couches connected by silver IV tubes to somnambulant drip tanks.

Inside the dreamscapes, physics is flexible: buildings float, doors open into ocean depths, and memories appear as glass ornaments.

Tone: Surreal, psychological, noir, and mind-bending. Blends Inception-style dream heist mechanics with urban fantasy crime.

Sensory Pillars:

  1. Sight: Gravity-defying cityscapes where streets curve overhead. Shimmering purple auroras floating in bedroom ceilings. Glass statues of forgotten memories.
  2. Sound: The rhythmic drip of somnambulant serum. Whispering voices echoing from doors that don’t belong. The distorted sound of ticking clocks.
  3. Touch and Smell: The cold silk of dream den couches. The sweet, almond-scented vapor of sleep serum. The feeling of weightlessness during subconscious leaps.

2. The Layers of Sleep

The Shallow Dream (Rem Level): The surface layer where basic fantasies and pleasant scenery reside. Easy to manipulate.

The Subconscious City: The shared cultural layer where city-wide archetypes, historical buildings, and repressed memories float.

The Lucid Void: The dangerous abyssal baseline beneath dreamscapes where nightmare entities dwell and un-tethered minds drift forever.

3. Factions

The Sleep Syndicate: The criminal organization controlling the production and distribution of somnambulant serums and dream dens.

The Dream Weavers Guild: Elite psychological architects who craft custom dreamscapes and protect clients from subconscious trauma.

The Nightmare Cult: Outlaw dreamers who intentionally infect sleep networks with terrifying nightmares to harvest psychic terror energy.

4. Unique Mechanic: Dream Stability

Track Dream Stability from 6 down to 0.

Stability Triggers:

  • Violating local dream logic (e.g., spawning modern weapons in historical setting): -1 Stability
  • Nightmare entity attack: -1 Stability
  • Re-anchoring dream architecture via Totem check: +1 Stability

Stability Thresholds:

  • 5-6: Stable dreamscape. Full environmental control.
  • 3-4: Minor distortion (melting walls, gravity shifts, echo voices).
  • 1-2: Severe collapse. Sky tearing open, nightmare entities spawning freely.
  • 0: Total Collapse. All participants fall into the Lucid Void.

5. Character Archetypes

The Architect

You design the geometry, physics, and buildings of custom dreamscapes.

  • Drive: “Construct flawless dreamscapes that withstand nightmare intrusion.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 2 | Mind 3 | Presence 1

The Somnambulist (Dream Fighter)

You protect the team inside the dreamscape using manifest willpower weapons.

  • Drive: “Destroy nightmare entities before they breach the client’s core ego.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 3 | Finesse 2 | Mind 1 | Presence 1

The Chemist

You brew somnambulant serums and monitor the physical body’s vital signs in the real world.

  • Drive: “Maintain optimal serum dosage and prevent physical shock.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 3 | Mind 2 | Presence 1

6. Starter Scenario: The Coma Outbreak

A wealthy Syndicate boss is trapped in a waking coma after a private dream session. Four other patrons in the same Dream Den are also catatonic. Sensor monitors indicate an active, highly aggressive Nightmare Entity has locked the dream doors from the inside.

The players must inject the serum, dive into the boss’s twisted nightmare dreamscape, navigate his childhood trauma traps, and destroy the Nightmare Entity before the physical bodies suffer brain death in 1 hour.
