The Clockwork Tree Gods
Gearwork Roots and Brass Foliage in the Sacred Forest
In the ancient forest of Arbor-Vitae, the trees are not organic wood. They are towering, mechanical constructs of brass, copper, and clockwork gears, powered by subterranean steam vents and liquid amber oil. The Clockwork Trees grow, bloom with brass leaves, and drop gear-seeds that spawn new saplings. The Order of Horologists worships these mechanical titans, tuning their giant gears to maintain seasonal cycles. But an industrial mining guild has begun felling the outer groves for scrap brass and steam-core energy, threatening the ecological balance of the mechanical forest.
“Listen to the heart of the Great Oak. That grinding noise in the main differential means the spring-shaft is misaligned. Fetch the three-inch wrench before the canopy locks up.”
- High Horologist Master Theron

1. Setting Overview and Tone
Arbor-Vitae is a living mechanical biome. The canopy clicks and ticks as solar sails catch sunlight to wind internal mainsprings. Streams of golden machine oil flow like rivers between copper-rooted hills.
The Horologist Monks tend the grove with long oil cans, tuning forks, and massive wrenches, viewing the mechanical forest as a divine cosmic clock.
Tone: Wonderous, mythic, intricate, and ecological. Blends fantasy nature reverence with steampunk mechanical craft.
Sensory Pillars:
- Sight: Towering brass trunks polished to a mirror shine, with interlocking gear networks visible beneath bronze bark plates. Shimmering copper leaves falling in autumn.
- Sound: The rhythmic ticking of a thousand clockwork trunks echoing through the forest canopy. The soft hiss of steam escaping root valves. The musical chime of gear-bells.
- Touch and Smell: Warm copper surfaces, golden amber oil on hands, the smell of heated brass and aromatic steam.

2. The Grove Landmarks
The Great Elder Oak: The thousand-year-old central clockwork titan whose mainspring drives the seasonal cycle for the entire valley.
The Steam Springs: Geothermal vents that provide high-pressure steam to power the root-pumps.
The Scrap Trench: The outer border where felled clockwork trees are stripped by mining Guild scavengers.
—
3. Factions
The Order of Horologists: Monks who maintain, oil, and tune the clockwork trees, treating mechanical forestry as a sacred duty.
The Scrap Guild: Industrial prospectors who view the forest as a massive deposit of valuable brass, copper, and steam technology.
The Mechanical Wildlife: Automaton beasts (brass stags, clockwork songbirds) created by the trees to defend the grove from intruders.

4. Unique Mechanic: Harmonic Winding
Track Harmonic Winding from 0 to 6.
Winding Modifiers:
- Lubricating central gear shaft: +1 Winding
- Felling a clockwork tree: -2 Winding
- Misaligned gear tuning check: -1 Winding
Winding States:
- 5-6: Perfect harmonic resonance. Golden oil flows freely; mechanical wildlife is calm and protective.
- 3-4: Minor friction. Loud gear grinding; steam vents venting unexpectedly.
- 1-2: Severe mechanical failure. Broken spring-shafts, falling brass limbs, hostile defense automatons.
- 0: Total Lockup. The grove dies, season cycle stops, steam explosions across the valley.

6. Starter Scenario: The Grinding Canopy
The Mining Guild has erected a steam-drill near the root system of the Great Elder Oak, siphoning off high-pressure steam. Without steam pressure, the Oak’s mainspring is unwinding out of control, causing massive gear-teeth to strip in the upper canopy and dropping heavy brass limbs onto the monastery.
The player characters must infiltrate the Mining Guild drill site, disable the steam siphon, climb the unstable main trunk of the Great Oak, and manually reset the mainspring brake before the central gear explodes.
