Hamsterheim: Tales from the Great Burrow

The Three Kindred Clans, the Crystal Warrens & the Shadow Beneath the Roots

By Alex Merced · Published 2026-07-31 · Online Supplements

In the age before memory, when the world above was ruled by giants and the earth was still cooling, three clans of small-folk dug their way into greatness. The Hammervault Hamsters, blessed with legendary cheek pouches that can carry magical artifacts between worlds, built the Crystal Warrens beneath the Deeproot Mountains-a civilization of amber-lit tunnels, mushroom forests, and seed-carved palaces that spans three mountain ranges. The Gerbit Scouts (gerbil-folk) are the great explorers and cartographers of the underground world, mapping territories no other clan has seen and trading with civilizations so deep in the earth that light is a foreign concept. The Cavy Healers (guinea pig-folk) are the shamans, counselors, and peacemakers-their natural empathy and herbal mastery making them the most sought-after advisors in any burrow court. Now the roots of the Great Tree that anchors the world above the warrens are beginning to rot-and the Rot-Shadow spreading through them is not natural.

Core Mechanic: Cheek Pouch Storage (Hammerkin only) / Pack Bond (all clans): Each character can designate one item as their Bonded Object, which they can store in or retrieve from their Cheek Pouch (Hammerkin), Pack (Gerbit), or Herb Satchel (Cavy) as a free action at any time-even in restraints. Additionally, all characters gain +1d6 to any action performed while adjacent to at least one ally of a different clan, representing the Three Kindred bond. This bonus increases to +2d6 when all three clans are represented in the same action-the Tri-Kin Blessing.

“The Hammervault elders say the world above is made of sky and danger. The Gerbit explorers say the world below goes deeper than any map we’ve ever drawn. The Cavy healers say the most important world is the one between your friends’ heartbeats. All three of them are right, which is why the Three Kindred have survived every catastrophe the world has thrown at small-folk since the beginning.”

1. Setting Overview & Tone

High-Concept Pitch: Hamsterheim is high fantasy at an intimate scale, where the grand epic traditions of the genre-ancient prophecies, political intrigue between powerful houses, world-threatening darkness, heroic journeys into unknown territory-are inhabited by three peoples whose physical smallness is entirely irrelevant to the size of their courage, civilization, and hearts. The tone is warm, genuinely heroic, and occasionally very funny without ever condescending: the small-folk take themselves completely seriously, and the Storyteller should too.

The Crystal Warrens are a genuine wonder of civilization: vast tunnel networks lined with luminescent crystal formations that Hammervault engineers have spent centuries shaping into architectural structures. A Hammervault palace is a cathedral of amber and blue-white crystal, lit from within by carefully bred bioluminescent fungi, its walls carved with relief murals depicting the Three Kindred’s long history. The food is extraordinary (seeds, berries, roots, and mushrooms prepared with culinary sophistication that rivals any surface civilization). The politics are fiercely complex.

Sensory Pillars:

  1. Sight: Crystal formations in every color, from amber to deep blue, casting multihued light through tunnels that function as both corridors and art; mushroom forests at the deeper levels, their caps glowing in soft greens and purples; the distant sparkle of the Deeproot Diamond-the legendary crystal at the center of the world, which the Hammervault claim as their ancestral birthright and the Gerbit claim they found first.
  2. Sound: The constant soft crunch of busy claws on crystal-gravel passages; the distinctive chitter-and-squeak language of the three clans (rendered as Common for player convenience); the deep rhythmic drumming of Cavy healing ceremonies echoing through interconnected chambers; the unsettling silence of a passage where the Rot-Shadow has reached.
  3. Touch & Smell: The earthy, complex smell of deep underground-minerals, fungi, ancient wood from the Great Tree’s roots, the clean cold of deep stone; the warmth of densely furred body contact in a tight passage (small-folk are not bothered by close quarters); the nauseating wrongness of Rot-Shadow passages, which smell of something between charcoal and rot.

The Core Tension: The Rot-Shadow spreading through the Great Tree’s roots is not a natural disease-it is targeted. Something down in the deepest unmapped territory has chosen to attack the Tree specifically, and the Crystal Warrens’ political factions are so busy competing with each other that they haven’t noticed the existential threat at their roots. The characters must navigate inter-clan politics, ancient grudges, and unexplored deep territory while the clock runs out.

2. Historical & Cultural Context

The Three Kindred history spans approximately four thousand years in the Crystal Warrens. The founding myth: the first Hammervault, Gerbit, and Cavy met at a crossroads beneath the Deeproot Mountains, each fleeing different catastrophes above. A Hammervault stores all three in her cheek pouches to hide them from a hunting predator. When she releases them, they swear the Tri-Kin Oath: no kindred shall be abandoned while another has room to carry them.

Hammervault (Hamster-folk): The builders, engineers, and merchants of the Crystal Warrens. Their legendary cheek pouches can expand to carry items far larger than physics suggests possible-a gift from the Deep God of Storage, according to Hammervault theology. They rule the largest burrow cities and host the Great Council.

Gerbit (Gerbil-folk): Swift, curious, and constitutionally incapable of leaving a passage unexplored. Gerbit scouts have mapped more of the underground world than any other civilization. Their Pack Bond social structure means a Gerbit without companions is considered ill; they travel in groups of 3-7 and share everything.

Cavy (Guinea Pig-folk): The healers, empaths, and diplomats of the Three Kindred. Cavy communicate extensively through complex vocalizations (purrs, chutts, whines) that carry emotional information impossible to fully fake-making them remarkable judges of sincerity and extraordinary counselors. Their herbal knowledge is unmatched underground.

3. Core Factions

House Hammervault (Ruling Dynasty)

The oldest Hammervault family, who built the first Crystal Warren and claim the Deeproot Diamond as ancestral property.

  • Descriptor Examples:
    • “I carry the Hammervault Registry-every artifact stored in every cheek pouch since the founding. It is heavier than it looks.”

The Gerbit Cartographic Guild

The organization of Gerbit scouts who map and catalog underground territories. Their maps are the most valuable trade goods in the Crystal Warrens.

  • Descriptor Examples:
    • “I’ve been in passages so deep the crystals run black. Don’t ask me what lives down there. I ran too fast to see it properly.”

The Cavy Healing Circle

The spiritual and medical authority of the Three Kindred. Their reading of the Rot-Shadow: something is in pain below, and pain this large causes rot.

  • Descriptor Examples:
    • “The Rot-Shadow isn’t evil. It’s a symptom. Whatever is making it is something that hurts. I want to find out why before we decide to kill it.”

4. Unique Mechanic: Tri-Kin Bond

Cheek Pouch / Pack / Satchel Storage: All characters can designate one Bonded Object retrievable freely at any time.

Kindred Bonus:

  • +1d6 to any action when adjacent to at least one ally of a different clan
  • +2d6 when all three clans are represented in the same action (Tri-Kin Blessing)

Clan Specialties:

  • Hammervault: Can store one additional item in Cheek Pouch. +1d6 to crafting, engineering, and negotiation actions.
  • Gerbit: +1d6 to navigation, scouting, and speed-based actions. Never lost in underground passages.
  • Cavy: +1d6 to healing, empathy, and detecting deception. Cavy purr (1 scene of sustained purring) removes one Minor condition from any adjacent character.

5. Character Archetypes

Archetype 1: The Hammervault Architect

A crystal engineer whose latest project-a deep-bore expansion tunnel-broke into a Rot-Shadow pocket and may have accelerated the spread. Now wracked with guilt and determined to fix what she started.

  • Quote: “I designed tunnels that will still be standing in ten thousand years. I also designed the one that woke the Rot. I need to know which one matters more before this is over.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 2 | Mind 3 | Presence 2

Archetype 2: The Gerbit Deepscout

A legendary Gerbit cartographer who is the only living small-folk to have mapped the region below the Rot-Shadow’s origin point. Her maps are in code, and she’s the only one who can read them.

  • Quote: “The passage goes down further than the crystal does. After the crystal ends, something else begins. I drew what I saw. I’m still not sure I believe what I drew.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 3 | Mind 2 | Presence 2

Archetype 3: The Cavy Pain-Reader

A Cavy healer who has spent three months studying the Rot-Shadow and has reached a conclusion that the Great Council considers dangerous: the Rot-Shadow is a cry for help from a dying entity so large it’s rotting the Great Tree just by touching it.

  • Quote: “I’ve healed everything from crystal-fever to a broken heart. I know what pain looks like. The Rot-Shadow is pain. Whatever is making it-it’s enormous, and it’s afraid, and it’s been afraid for a very long time.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 2 | Mind 2 | Presence 3

6. Conditions, Starter Scenario & Why It Matters

Conditions: Crystal-Fever (minor, from deep cold), Pack-Separated (moderate, Gerbit without allies), Rot-Touch (severe, contact with Rot-Shadow material-spreading organic condition), Cheek-Locked (Hammervault’s Bonded Object inaccessible).

Starter Scenario: The Root Parliament The Cavy Healing Circle has called an emergency Root Parliament-a meeting of all three kindred at the base of the Great Tree’s central root cluster, deep below the Crystal Warrens. But when the delegation arrives, they find the meeting site surrounded by Rot-Shadow growth-and inside the growth, still alive but completely still, three other small-folk representatives who went ahead as advance scouts. The Rot-Shadow isn’t spreading randomly. It arranged the delegates in a pattern. It’s trying to communicate.

Why It Matters: Hamsterheim uses the beloved small-fantasy tradition (see: Mouse Guard, Redwall, Watership Down) to explore themes of found family, political diplomacy, and ecological stewardship. The setting’s scale inversion-where creatures we associate with smallness and vulnerability are civilization’s architects-is a reminder that “apex” is a function of culture and community, not size.
