The Adheric Reach: Chronicles of the Gecko Kingdoms
Sunwalker Clans, Adhesion-Warriors & the Ancient Sandstone Dynasties of the Sun-Carved Canyons
In the great sun-canyon lands of the Adheric Reach, where sandstone cliffs rise so high that lesser creatures must look twice to find the sky, the gecko-folk have built their civilization on the singular gift that separates them from all other peoples: they can go anywhere. Adhesion-warriors run up sheer cliff faces. Gecko architects build cities on surfaces no other civilization considers habitable-the undersides of canyon overhangs, the vertical faces of mesa walls, the ceilings of enormous underground chambers. Their cities are three-dimensional in a way no other people's can be. The Gecko Dynasties are organized by species: the Crested Houses (elaborate crested geckos) govern from dramatic high-sun perches, the Day-Kin (day geckos in vivid green and blue) are the traders and artists of the Reach, and the Leopard Clan (leopard geckos) are the night-runners, diplomats, and spies who operate in the hours when the sun's politics sleep. Now the ancient Sun-Obelisks-the stone spires that channel the Reach's heat-magic-are beginning to cool, and the cold is spreading from the inside.
“They ask me why the gecko-folk don’t fear heights. The question reveals the asker’s limitation, not ours. Height is only terrifying if falling is a possibility. For us, every surface is the ground.”
- Crested House diplomat, responding to a plains-dweller ambassador

1. Setting Overview & Tone
High-Concept Pitch: The Adheric Reach is high fantasy set in a world of desert grandeur-vast canyon systems, soaring mesas, sun-scorched plains punctuated by oasis springs-inhabited by a people who have made the vertical world their home. Gecko-folk cities on cliff faces are not a curiosity or an engineering achievement; they are simply where cities are built, because wall-space is the most abundant surface in the Reach and gecko-folk use all of it.
The setting tone is ancient and proud-the gecko-folk have a civilization that predates most other peoples’ recorded histories, and they know it. Their architecture is genuinely old: canyon cities carved directly into sandstone faces over millennia, worn smooth by generations of gecko hands, decorated with relief murals depicting dynasties that other civilizations have entirely forgotten. Their magic is solar: heat drawn from the great sun through the ancient obelisk network and distributed through the canyon city systems as warmth, light, and power.
Sensory Pillars:
- Sight: The extraordinary geometry of Adheric canyon cities-streets running vertically along cliff faces, public markets on canyon overhangs, residential districts in clusters on mesa undersides where the view is straight down to the canyon floor a kilometer below; the rich terra-cotta, burnt orange, and sun-gold palette of the sandstone everything is carved from; the brilliant colors of Day-Kin merchants’ stalls (vivid green, electric blue) contrasting with the warm stone.
- Sound: The specific sound of gecko-folk movement on stone-rapid, adhesive, the slight pull-and-snap of adhesive pads releasing and reattaching; the deep resonance of wind through the canyon system, which the gecko-folk have shaped over centuries into the Canyon Organ, playing natural music; the cooling obelisks’ diminishing hum.
- Touch & Smell: The dry, warm touch of sun-heated sandstone-perfect temperature for gecko thermoregulation; the clean, mineral smell of canyon air; the sudden temperature drop near a cooling obelisk, which registers as immediate physical distress to thermoconforming gecko-folk.

2. The Three Dynastic Kinds
The Crested Houses (Crested Gecko-folk): Dramatic, elaborately frilled, and genetically diverse in spectacular coloration. Their crests function as status displays-larger crests = higher house rank. They govern from the highest sun-perches, where solar energy is most intense and they can literally look down on everyone below.
The Day-Kin (Day Gecko-folk): The most vivid in coloration-brilliant greens, blues, and reds. Natural artists and traders, their color patterns are the canvas for gecko-folk art traditions. Day-Kin artisans tattoo additional color patterns using specialized body-painting techniques that interact with their natural pigmentation. Their markets are the economic heart of the Reach.
The Leopard Clan (Leopard Gecko-folk): The only nocturnal gecko-folk kind, with the distinctive spotted patterns and large night-adapted eyes. They operate in the hours when the sun’s politics sleep-diplomatic missions, intelligence work, and the secretive negotiations that keep Crested House rivalries from becoming wars. Leopard Clan have slightly lower natural Sun-Warmth (they are adapted to cooler temperatures) but maintain effectiveness in cold environments where other gecko-folk become sluggish.

3. Factions
House Sunshard (Dominant Crested): The most powerful Crested House. Controls the three largest canyon cities and the primary obelisk maintenance order. They are not cooling the obelisks-but someone in their maintenance hierarchy might be.
The Day-Kin Merchant Council: Nominally apolitical, deeply connected to information networks that cross all dynastic lines. Their trade caravans carry goods across the Reach-and intelligence.
The Obelisk Wardens: An ancient religious/technical order responsible for the Sun-Obelisks’ maintenance. The cooling is happening on their watch, and they are being destroyed from the inside by an unknown faction.
The Deep Ones: A Leopard Clan underground movement that has been quietly relocating gecko-folk to prepared shelter networks against an anticipated cooling catastrophe. They know something the surface politics don’t.

4. Unique Mechanic
Adhesion Movement: Any surface can be traversed without a roll. Adhesion Burst (once per scene): immediate adhesion to target-stays attached until voluntary release.
Sun-Warmth Track (1-6):
- 1-2: Sluggish. -1d6 to Finesse and Speed.
- 3-4: Normal function.
- 5-6: Peak activation. +1d6 to Force actions.
Thermal Environments: Desert noon +2 Sun-Warmth. Canyon shadow -1. Cooling obelisk radius -2. Night (without source) -1 per hour.

5. Character Archetypes
Archetype 1: The Crested Warden
An Obelisk Warden whose sector has just gone dark-the first full obelisk failure in recorded history. She was doing her job correctly. Someone else was doing something she didn’t see.
- Quote: “I have maintained this obelisk for twenty years. I know every crystal, every channel, every resonance pattern. Whatever happened to it happened from inside the stone. I need to know how.”
- Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 2 | Mind 3 | Presence 2
Archetype 2: The Leopard Clan Contact
A Deep Ones operative who has been in contact with whatever is inside the cooling obelisks-because the Leopard Clan has been using the obelisk network as a communication system for three generations, and they’ve noticed the interference for much longer than the surface politics have.
- Quote: “The obelisks aren’t failing. They’re being used. Something is drawing on them from below. We’ve been trying to figure out what for six years. We ran out of time to do this quietly.”
- Approach Distribution: Force 2 | Finesse 3 | Mind 2 | Presence 1
Archetype 3: The Day-Kin Colormaster
An artist whose Sun-Warmth is naturally exceptionally high-high enough that she can feel the obelisk network’s energy flow as tactile warmth on her skin, making her a living map of the cooling pattern.
- Quote: “I’ve been painting the warmth patterns for twenty years. Watch how the colors change across my work. This is a map of the cooling. It shows direction. Something is pulling the heat toward the deep canyons.”
- Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 3 | Mind 2 | Presence 2

6. Starter Scenario & Why It Matters
The Cold Apex: The highest sun-perch in the Adheric Reach-House Sunshard’s legendary throne room on the mesa’s absolute summit, where no cold has touched in ten thousand years-registered a temperature drop this morning. The Obelisk Wardens are in emergency session. The Leopard Clan Deep Ones have surfaced for the first time in living memory. The Day-Kin Merchant Council has suspended all trade pending “stability assessment.” The characters have 24 hours before the Crested Houses declare martial law, at which point the investigation becomes impossible.
Why It Matters: Gecko biology-wall-climbing, thermoconformity, vivid coloration-directly informs this civilization’s politics, architecture, and magic in ways that create settings no humanocentric fantasy can reach. The vertical city design forces spatial thinking. The Sun-Warmth mechanic makes temperature a constant tactical consideration. The three dynastic species give players distinct cultural positions with mechanical weight. Together, this creates a genuinely alien civilization that nonetheless operates on comprehensible political and personal motivations.
