The Canopy Empire: Chronicles of the Shell-Lords
Scarab Dynasties, Firefly Lanterns & Chitin-Armored Warriors of the Great Leaf Kingdoms
Beneath the vast canopy of the World-Forest-where each leaf is a continent and each root is a kingdom-the beetle-folk have built the Canopy Empire, the oldest civilization in the known world. The Shell-Lords trace their dynasties back to the First Hatch, when the world was new and the beetle-folk were charged by the Great Dung Beetle (the divine architect of the universe) with organizing the material world. Today, the Empire is divided by Shell Color: the emerald-shelled Jade Houses who rule the upper canopy, the sapphire-shelled Azure Kindred who govern the middle bark-ledges, and the gold-shelled Amber Clans who control the deep root-floor territories below. The hierarchy has held for ten thousand years. It is about to shatter: a new kind of beetle-folk-pure white shells-has emerged in the deepest root territories, and the ancient prophecy says white shells herald the Great Molt, the transformation that will change everything.
“The Great Dung Beetle shaped the world from material no one else wanted. This is the first and most important theological teaching of the Empire: the universe was built from what others discarded, by someone willing to roll it into something magnificent. We are not a civilization of the privileged. We are a civilization of the persistent.”
- Opening verse of the Canopy Catechism

1. Setting Overview & Tone
High-Concept Pitch: The Canopy Empire is epic fantasy at insect scale-but “insect scale” means something very different here. The beetle-folk are the dominant intelligence in a world where the smallest features of a forest have become the architectural elements of civilization. A leaf is a plaza. A branch is a highway. A root system is an underworld with its own kingdoms. The setting has the grandeur of high empire fantasy (ancient dynasties, prophecy, world-shaking political crises) with the visual wonder of a world where every material is natural but experienced at a scale that makes it magnificent.
Tone: Mythic and reverent, with the weight of ten thousand years of civilization and the immediacy of a prophecy that is actively happening. The beetle-folk are genuinely ancient and genuinely proud, and their civilization has real depth-architecture, philosophy, religion, art-that deserves to be taken seriously.
Sensory Pillars:
- Sight: The Canopy Empire at night-a spectacular panorama of bioluminescent firefly lanterns carried through bark-carved cities, glowing in amber, gold, and blue-white chains along root-highways and branch-avenues; the iridescent shells of the Shell-Lords catching the light in color patterns that function as heraldic insignia; the deep green darkness of the lower root-floor where the white-shelled have appeared.
- Sound: The distinctive percussion of chitin-on-chitin formal greeting rituals; the deep resonance of war-drums made from seed pods struck with leg-joints; the delicate, complex song of a firefly-kind communication ritual that uses light-pulses for emotional nuance that sound cannot convey.
- Touch & Smell: The specific texture of different wood substrates-smooth polished bark in Jade House corridors, rough root-fiber in Amber Clan territories; the organic complexity of the World-Forest’s smells: chlorophyll, fungi, decay, and growth simultaneously; the distinct smell of a newly molted beetle-folk-vulnerable, fresh, intensely alive.

2. The Shell Hierarchy
Jade Houses (Emerald Shell): Upper canopy rulers. Control sunlight access-the most valuable resource in a canopy civilization. Jade House architecture is based on maximizing light: transparent shell-lacquer windows, mirror-polished surfaces, and elevated perches that catch direct sun.
Azure Kindred (Sapphire Shell): Middle bark-ledge governors. Control water flow and fungal cultivation-the food supply. They are the merchants and engineers of the Empire, less politically prestigious than Jade but economically essential.
Amber Clans (Gold Shell): Deep root-floor territories. The laborers, soldiers, and keepers of the deepest lore. The Amber Clans have the strongest martial tradition and the bitterest political grievances-they bear the most work and receive the least status.
The White-Shelled: Recently emerged in the deepest root territories. Their shells are unprecedented-white has not been documented in beetle-folk biology. The Canopy priests say the ancient text calls them “the Molted Ones who come before the Great Molt.” Everyone interprets this differently. None of the interpretations are comfortable.

3. Factions
The Jade Senate: Upper canopy political body. Deeply divided between accommodating the White-Shelled (prophecy-acknowledgment faction) and eliminating them before the prophecy can unfold (control faction).
The Amber Warriors’ Brotherhood: The Empire’s professional military. Predominantly Amber Clan. The Brotherhood has a secret: the first White-Shelled were born to Amber parents. They haven’t disclosed this to the Senate.
The Firefly Lantern Guild: A trans-class organization of bioluminescent beetle-folk who serve as the Empire’s communication network, light-engineers, and-informally-the only institution that has actually spoken with the White-Shelled.

4. Unique Mechanic: Shell Armor & Carapace
Carapace Points = Carapace Rating (1-6) Each scene, Carapace Points absorb physical damage before Conditions apply.
Carapace Break (from Severe physical attack): Permanent -1 Carapace until full molt (one session downtime). Molt restores all Carapace but requires the character to spend one scene in a completely vulnerable state.
Firefly Glow (firefly-kind only):
- Passive: Illuminate a 10-meter radius.
- Active: Blinding flash (opponent loses 1d6 from next action).
- Signal: Communicate complex information across line-of-sight distances.
Shell Color Social Mechanics:
- Jade Shell: +1d6 to Presence in formal Empire contexts.
- Azure Shell: +1d6 to Commerce and Engineering actions.
- Amber Shell: +1d6 to Force actions, free military rank recognition.
- White Shell: No social bonus-all Empire contexts treat White-Shelled as either prophetic figures (+2 to Presence with believers) or threats (-1d6 to Presence with control faction).

5. Character Archetypes
Archetype 1: The Amber Warrior
A Brotherhood soldier who is the sibling of the first White-Shelled. Knows the secret that the first White-Shelled are Amber-born. Has been protecting that information and their sibling simultaneously.
- Quote: “My sibling’s shell changed color overnight. They are the same person. The Empire is treating them as a prophecy. I am treating them as my family. These are not compatible positions.”
- Approach Distribution: Force 3 | Finesse 2 | Mind 1 | Presence 2
Archetype 2: The Firefly Ambassador
A Lantern Guild member who has been in communication with the White-Shelled and is the only person in the Empire who knows what they actually want. This information is being strategically withheld until the right moment.
- Quote: “They’re not a prophecy. They’re not a threat. They’re people who woke up with different shells and found everyone they knew afraid of them. I have been bringing them food and asking questions. This is apparently radical.”
- Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 2 | Mind 2 | Presence 3
Archetype 3: The Jade Prophecy Scholar
A Senate-appointed scholar who has spent thirty years studying the Great Molt prophecy and has just realized that the text the control faction is using to justify eliminating the White-Shelled is a translation error from three thousand years ago.
- Quote: “The original text says ‘the Molted Ones herald transformation.’ The 822 BCE translation says ‘the Molted Ones are destruction.’ The translating scholar was working for a Jade House that was politically threatened at the time. I found his notes. This is all very awkward.”
- Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 2 | Mind 4 | Presence 1

6. Starter Scenario & Why It Matters
The First Molt Council: The Jade Senate has called an extraordinary session to vote on the Elimination Decree. The Amber Warriors’ Brotherhood is split between following Senate orders and protecting the White-Shelled (who are their people). The Firefly Guild has announced it will use its communication network to broadcast whatever the White-Shelled want said before the vote-and the White-Shelled have requested an audience with the full Senate. The characters have 12 hours before the vote to either deliver the White-Shelled’s message, expose the translation error, reveal the Amber-birth secret, or find a fourth option nobody has thought of yet.
Why It Matters: The beetle-folk civilization interrogates the intersection of biological determinism and social hierarchy. Shell color is birth-assigned but socially interpreted-a direct metaphor for every human system of status that claims to be natural. The Great Molt prophecy asks what happens when a society’s foundational story comes due. The answer the characters reach will define what the Canopy Empire becomes.
