Every city's electrical, heating, and manufacturing system draws from a local ley-node, connected to the global Grid via geological transmission. The technology is genuinely renewable: earth magic replenishes over centuries. The extraction rate set by the Grid Authority is not genuinely sustainable: nodes are being drawn faster than they can replenish, and the consequences are geological - subsidence, tremors, and the gradual silencing of deep earth frequencies that the Grid Authority calls background noise and the Nomad Line-Walkers call the voice of the land. The Line-Walkers - nomadic cultures who have followed ley-lines for 3,000 years - have been documenting node depletion for decades. The Grid Authority has been classifying their reports as non-expert testimony.

The Leyline Grid works. Cities are powered, warm, and productive. The engineers are competent and the infrastructure is maintained. The problem is not technical failure. It is the extraction rate, which was set by economists and geologists who understood nodes as quantified resources and did not consult the people who had been managing those resources for three millennia.
The Line-Walkers have documentation going back 300 years showing node depletion patterns. Their methodology is rigorous - they are not romantics claiming the earth has feelings. They are empiricists who have been measuring the same nodes for generations and know what overextraction looks like before the geological consequences become undeniable. They have been trying to enter that data into the official record for 40 years.
Tone: Ecological crisis drama set in a world where the crisis is geological and the authority that should be listening is not listening for structural reasons, not malicious ones.
2. The Grid Ecosystem

The Line-Walker Confederacy is a coalition of nomadic cultures that have lived with the ley-lines for millennia. Their knowledge of node behavior is unmatched. Their legal standing to testify before the Grid Authority has been challenged at every regulatory hearing.
The Deep Tremor - a series of geological events in the western region that the Grid Authority attributes to natural seismic activity. The Line-Walkers say three of the affected nodes were at 90%+ depletion before the tremors. The Grid Authority says correlation is not causation.
3. Factions
The Grid Authority - The regulatory body that manages extraction rights and sets rates. Has 40 years of Line-Walker depletion data that has been formally received and not formally incorporated into rate calculations.
The Line-Walker Confederacy - Advocates for extraction rate reduction and node recovery periods. Currently in formal legal proceedings before the Grid Authority’s Review Board.
The Independent Geomancers - Unaffiliated engineers who have reviewed the Line-Walker data and are professionally uncomfortable with the Rate Authority’s methodology. A few have begun speaking publicly.

The Grid Authority’s next extraction draw from Node 12 is scheduled in 18 hours.
