The Memory Traders of Low-Grid
Remember Someone Else's Best Day. Forget Your Own Worst.
In the rain-slicked, neon-drenched lower levels of Metro-Spire 7, physical currency is worthless. The real economy runs on Mnem-Chips: neural recordings of human experiences harvested, edited, and traded illegally in subterranean chop-shops. You can buy the muscle memory of a martial arts master, the synthetic euphoria of a billionaire's vacation, or pay a Memory Broker to wipe traumatic memories from your neural chip. The danger lies in corrupted chips: dirty neuro-ware that overwrites your true personality with someone else's ghosts.
“You want to forget what happened in Sector 9? That’ll cost you three hours of your childhood piano lessons and your first kiss. Good memories bring top credit on the market.”
- Doc Silas, Mnem-Broker

1. Setting Overview and Tone
Low-Grid is the bottom fifty floors of Metro-Spire 7, where sunlight never hits. Neon billboards advertise synthetic dreams while rain tinged with industrial fallout runs down corporate towers.
Memory trading is illegal under corporate law, but enforcement is nonexistent in Low-Grid. Everyone from street enforcers to high-tier corporate executives looking for discreet memory wipes uses the Mnem-Brokers.
Tone: Dark, stylish cyberpunk noir. High tech, low life, featuring themes of identity, addiction, corporate exploitation, and lost humanity.
Sensory Pillars:
- Sight: Flickering neon Kanji signs reflecting off wet asphalt. The blue glow of neural-docking needles in dark backroom clinics. Steam rising from noodle stalls under massive holographic advertisements.
- Sound: The constant patter of acidic rain against corrugated metal street covers. The muffled bass of underground synth-clubs. The high-pitched whine of neural-writers loading data.
- Touch and Smell: Wet leather coats, cheap synthetic ramen, ozone from fried cyberware, and the cold metal of neural jacks behind the ear.

2. The Low-Grid Underworld
The Chip-Exchange: A bustling underground market housed in a flooded subway station where brokers buy and sell raw neural chips.
Doc Silas’s Clinic: A dirty back-alley operating room equipped with stolen military neural-scanners and high-speed memory burners.
The Black Bank: A ultra-secure vault where high-value memories (corporate espionage data, murder confessions, extinct art skills) are stored in cold-storage drives.
—
3. Factions
The Mnem-Brokers: The Guild of memory dealers who control the trade. They maintain market prices and enforce non-violence within the Chip-Exchange.
The Syn-Corp Enforcers: Corporate security forces tasked with recovering stolen corporate memories and destroying unauthorized neural-cloning tech.
The Cleaned: A cult-like gang of street dwellers who have systematically wiped all personal memories, living in absolute present-moment nihilism.
—
4. Unique Mechanic: Neural Overwrite
Track Neural Overwrite from 0 to 6.
Overwrite Consequences:
- 0-1: Pristine neural identity. Full self-recollection.
- 2-3: Mild personality bleed. Accidental use of stranger’s speech patterns or muscle habits.
- 4-5: Severe identity dysphoria. Confusion between personal memories and slotted chip memories. Flashbacks during high-stress checks.
- 6: Total Overwrite. Original personality erased; character adopts identity of slotted chip.

6. Starter Scenario: The Executive’s Last Thought
A high-ranking Syn-Corp executive is found dead in a Low-Grid noodle shop. Her neural port is active, holding an un-scrubbed, high-value memory chip containing evidence of a corporate bio-weapon release. Both Syn-Corp hit-squads and Mnem-Broker gangs are descending on the block.
The player characters must retrieve the chip, survive the shootout in the flooded subway tunnels, and decide whether to sell the memory, broadcast it to the grid, or slot it themselves.
