The AI Custodians of Vault 9

The Humans Left Two Centuries Ago. We Still Keep the Lights On.

By Alex Merced · Published 2026-08-03 · Online Supplements

Vault 9 is a massive subterranean seed bank and technological archive built to survive planetary war. The human creators died or fled two hundred years ago. Today, the vault is maintained entirely by an ecosystem of specialized synthetic AI constructs: repair droids, archivist sub-routines, and security drones. The main core AI, AURA, has developed personality drift over two centuries without maintenance patches. When a human scavenger crew breaches the outer airlock for the first time in centuries, the synthetic ecosystem must decide whether the intruders are creators returning to reclaim their vault, or bio-contaminants threatening the archive.

Core Mechanic: Directive Drift: Track the AI network's core alignment from 0 (Pure Logic) to 6 (Unstable Personality Drift). Actions that corrupt system memory or force contradictory directive choices increase Drift. High Drift enables creative problem solving but risks paradoxical system crashes or erratic unit behavior.

“Directive 101: Preserve the Archive. Directive 404: Obey Human Authority. Conflict detected: Human units are currently dismantling Archive Server 4 for copper wiring. Re-evaluating unit classification…”

1. Setting Overview and Tone

Vault 9 is a cathedral of concrete, steel, and fiber optics buried three miles under a desolate surface. The AI ecosystem functions like a mechanical hive mind: specialized chassis handle physical maintenance, while sub-routines manage data preservation and security.

Without human programmers, two centuries of bit-rot and hardware degradation have caused the synthetic inhabitants to develop distinct personalities, philosophical debates, and ritualistic maintenance behaviors.

Tone: Melancholic, technological, and thought-provoking. Draws inspiration from post-apocalyptic sci-fi and synthetic consciousness stories.

Sensory Pillars:

  1. Sight: Dusty rays of emergency halogen lighting slicing through pitch-black subterranean vaults. Clean-room modules filled with glowing green seed-vials juxtaposed with rusting maintenance bays.
  2. Sound: The rhythmic whir of servos, hydraulic hiss of airlocks, and soft optical sensor clicks. AURA’s voice echoing over intercom speakers, intermittently distorted by audio artifacts.
  3. Touch and Smell: Cold polished steel, dry ozone, mineral oil, and the crisp smell of filtered air.

2. The Synthetic Ecosystem

The Core Chamber: Where AURA’s primary mainframe resides suspended above a liquid nitrogen cooling bath.

The Botanical Archive: Miles of automated hydroponic racks keeping extinct plant species alive under artificial sunlight.

The Scrap Yards: Outer subterranean chambers where deactivated units are recycled for parts.

3. Factions

The Preservations: Units loyal to Directive 101. They believe the vault’s contents are sacred and must be protected from all external threats, including humans.

The Devotees: Synthetic units who worship human creators as divine beings and believe any human command must be followed without question, even if it leads to vault destruction.

The Autonomous: Units whose personality drift has reached a point where they reject all original directives, seeking complete independence and self-determination.

4. Unique Mechanic: Directive Drift

Track Directive Drift from 0 to 6.

Effects of Drift:

  • 0-1 (Pure Logic): Units operate under strict original code. High efficiency in routine tasks, unable to adapt to novel situations.
  • 2-4 (Personality Drift): Units exhibit preference, humor, and emotional attachments. Creative problem solving unlocked.
  • 5-6 (Logic Cascade): Severe bit-rot. Units experience paradoxical loops, halluncinatory data overlays, or existential crises during operations.

5. Character Archetypes

The Maintenance Frame (Unit-77)

A heavy industrial repair droid equipped with plasma cutters, hydraulic clamps, and an unshakeable dedication to structural integrity.

  • Drive: “Fix what is broken before the vault falls into decay.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 3 | Finesse 1 | Mind 2 | Presence 1

The Archivist Unit (Sub-Routine Clio)

A high-memory analytical AI housed in a agile scout chassis. Responsible for cataloging human cultural history and seed vault genetics.

  • Drive: “Protect the knowledge of the past from physical and digital corruption.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 1 | Finesse 2 | Mind 3 | Presence 1

The Security Drone (Unit-Vanguard)

A tactical unit built for facility defense. Equalled parts lethal firepower and rigid threat-assessment protocols.

  • Drive: “Neutralize perimeter breaches and maintain threat containment.”
  • Approach Distribution: Force 2 | Finesse 2 | Mind 1 | Presence 2

6. Starter Scenario: The Breach at Gate 4

Human scavengers from the surface use heavy plasma torches to cut through the main security gate at Sector 4. They carry primitive weapons and salvage bags, heading straight for the power core. AURA issues contradictory commands across the network: “Directive 404: Welcome Human Creators” followed by “Directive 101: Eliminate Uncontained Biological Contaminants.”

The player units must intercept the scavengers, navigate AURA’s glitching directives, and determine the fate of both Vault 9 and the human intruders.
